Research Projects
1. Healthy Mothers--Healthy Kids: A pilot project funded by SOM to help overweight mothers of 18-36 month old children lose weight and create a healthful home environment to help their children avoid overweight as they grow up.
2. AFFECT-Diabetes (Automated Feedback for Effective Control of Type 2 Diabetes):  An RCT comparing the effect of intensive behavioral coaching based on automated feedback of energy expenditure, dietary intake, and blood sugars on HgA1c.  There are 3 comparison groups:  Armband without intensive coaching; Intensive coaching without armband, and usual care.

I'd propose to involve the student in data collection and management for these studies.  S/he will be able to sit in on HMHK intervention sessions and participate in team meetings for AFFECT-Diabetes, when we will be discussing participant progress and behavioral coaching.

Both of these studies are funded and beginning recruitment at present. Interventions will begin in June.
