Former chair of surgery Dr. James L. Haynes dies at 76

Dr. James L. Haynes died Friday, November 4, 2016 at the age of 76.

Dr. Haynes joined the School of Medicine in 1979 as an associate professor of surgery, and served as chair of the Department of Surgery from 1986 to 1993. During his tenure at UofSC, he initiated the Trauma Program at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital and created the Peripheral Vascular Laboratories at both Palmetto Richland and the Dorn VA Medical Center. He retired in 2009 after 31 years of teaching.

Dr. Haynes’ research was published in multiple medical journals and he was a frequent presenter at national surgical conferences. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Vascular Surgery and numerous other surgical and academic organizations.
