SOM has many educational advantages

Among USC School of Medicine's many educational advantages is its small class size, which affords students the opportunity to develop close student-to-student and student-to-faculty learning relationships. A well-planned, highly effective curriculum taught by dedicated faculty members places emphasis on the correlation between basic science and clinical science training.

Additionally, students benefit from the University's focus on interdisciplinary and interdepartmental teaching and research. Classroom, library, computing, and research facilities on the school's 100-acre suburban campus are unexcelled nationally. Surrounding the campus, quiet residential areas and parks offer the opportunity for exercise and leisure activities.

USCSM works closely with its seven affiliated hospitals to provide students valuable clinical experience during their four years of medical education. While the majority of students complete core clinical training in the third (M-III) and fourth (M-IV) years at affiliated hospitals in Columbia, a select number of USCSM students can choose to complete core clinical training at the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, S.C. An impressive selection of residency programs is co-sponsored by the school with its affiliated hospitals.

The Ph.D. and M.S. in Biomedical Sciences, the M.S. in Genetic Counseling, the M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling, and the M.S. in Biomedical Sciences with specialization in nurse anesthesia degree programs have further enhanced the school's educational mission.

Socially responsive and responsible, USCSM's educational program stresses the biopsychosocial model, emphasizing the doctor/patient relationship, the relationships between biomedical and psychosocial problems, preventive medicine, and community health. A large percentage of USCSM's graduates practice in primary care specialties, many in under-served areas of South Carolina.

Through the Rural Primary Care Education Projects, medical students have the unique opportunity, during the M-III Family Medicine clerkship, to train in University-administered interdisciplinary educational programs for medical, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and social work students and to get their first taste of rural practice.

Because USCSM is an important component of a comprehensive research university, medical students have many opportunities for interaction with students in other disciplines as well as participation in student organizations, intramural sports, and social events. The University of South Carolina's campus is located just four miles from the USCSM campus and offers access to excellent research facilities.

A distinguished core faculty of basic scientists and clinicians brings to USCSM a variety of outstanding academic training and experience. This core faculty is complemented and enriched by a large number of community physicians who participate in both hospital clerkships and office preceptorships. An active faculty research program ensures that the medical education program is kept up-to-date and reinforces training in the scientific approach to medicine.

A favorable faculty-student ratio provides both enhanced opportunities for clinical experience and supportive personal relationships between students and faculty.
