SOM faculty member publishes book on human brain

A School of Medicine faculty member has written a text book on the human brain - one of science's last and most daunting frontiers.

James R. Augustine, Ph.D., an associate professor in the SOM's department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience is the author of "Human Neuroanatomy" recently published by Academic Press, an imprint of Elsevier.

"I have studied and taught human neuroanatomy for more than 30 years to medical students and graduate students from an assortment of disciplines (biomedical science, exercise science, neuroscience, physical therapy, psychology) as well as residents and practicing physicians at the USC School of Medicine," Augustine said.

"My students have asked me thousands of questions over these many years. Their questions have encouraged me in my own personal study and have helped clarify my thinking about the structure and function of the human brain. These students, through their questions, have taught me many things and I am most grateful for that. This book is dedicated to my students as a way of thanking them for what they have taught me. It gives me an occasion to share our collective understanding of the human brain with others," said Augustine.

Augustine offered these final thoughts in the preface to the book: "It is my sincere hope that many students will enjoy reading this book and that in the process they will begin to grasp something of what little we do know about the structure and function of the human brain and spinal cord. It is my hope that each reader will begin a lifelong study of the nervous system. It is also my hope that that study will lead them to do more than just write a book but rather make a discovery, find a cure, or engage in some worthwhile endeavor that will relieve the suffering of those with neurological disease and give them hope for a better life."
